Cathodic Protection
In addition to the two main categories of borehole, we also drill boreholes for other purposes — such as cathodic protection wells, an ingenious way of preventing the corrosion of large sections of metal, such as many kilometres of pipeline. These and other borehole types are marked with shale‑grey flags on the map.
Put simply, cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. One method connects the metal to be protected to a more easily corroded “sacrificial metal” that acts as the anode. You can read more about it here.
