More than one Borehole Type
When I get time, I sit myself down and open up the admin panel to our online UK borehole map. It’s here I can add information of our latest completed projects. It’s a map of both water boreholes and boreholes for ground source heating, which we have installed over the last few years.
Waterwells are brown flags and Ground Source Heating projects are blue. If you scroll your mouse wheel, you can zoom in and out. If per chance you don’t have this functionality, then there are plus and minus symbols in bottom right corner, with which you can also zoom.

Cathodic Protection
In addition to the two main categories of borehole, we also find ourselves drilling boreholes for other reasons, such as cathodic protection wells, which I find quite an ingenious way of preventing corrosion of large sections of metal, such as in many kilometres of pipeline. These and other borehole types are marked by shale grey flags on the map.
Quite simply put, cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. A method of protection connects the metal to be protected to a more easily corroded “sacrificial metal” to act as the anode. You can read more about it here.
