Better Pitch & Better Water Supply
Throughout the summer, Sheffield United hope to keep fans up-to-date with the progress of the new state-of-the-art turf and the new water borehole. ( See Borehole Drilling Rig above)
Experts have begun work on both the installation of a Desso pitch and the installation of a water borehole to provide the ground with all its water needs, bringing to an end around 153 years of football being played on a traditional surface, and reliance on a costly municipal water supply at the oldest professional football stadium in the world.
Desso GrassMaster is a sports playing field surface composed of natural grass combined with artificial fibres. The artificial grass fibres are injected 20 centimetres (7.9″) deep, and cover about 3% of the surface.

While the grass is growing, the roots intertwine with the artificial fibres. The designers claim this anchors the field to create a solid, even structure with good drainage and ‘playing comfort’.
With the new water borehole, the ground will have a reliable and cost saving water supply to maintain the new turf.
